Portrait of a Runner: Marilyn Potter

Why do you run?
In the beginning it was to keep up with my sport when I was in college (this was over 20 years ago). After college, I continued running because I like to be active and team sports were less and less available.  And now years later, I run to challenge myself, but also run for the social aspect and to be a part of a community. It gives me a way to meet people and form lasting friendships. I like to be able to set an example for my kids to be active and healthy. As a single mom running has allowed me to keep up with my 2 busy boys! It gives me energy, makes me feel good and can reduce stress on a frustrating day.

What do you love about running or not love?
What I love: Running can go with me anywhere: on vacation, business, travel or even to work for a lunch date. All it takes is some good shoes and exercise clothes (and a little time)!  I also love motivating others and setting an example by exercising on a regular basis.
What I don’t love: The prices of those shoes and clothes! But really, what’s not to love?

Favorite running moment?
Tough question. Probably the first time I completed a marathon.  I had never entered a race over 5 miles before that, and started the training with only 12 weeks before the marathon. I challenged myself, trained by myself, didn’t know what to expect, and then conquered it. I think I’ll never forget that finishing time: 3:25:53!  I’m not sure if it’s true for all runners, but I can remember my first marathon and my best marathon times to the second.  Quoting finishing times for the other marathons, including 3 Boston appearances, would only be estimates at best. Oh, and btw, the PR time is 3:15:58.

Biggest running disappointment?
Having to drop out of a race due to injury, with no prior issues during the weeks and weeks of training. I was in peak shape, PR was in sight, but with a cold, windy start, before half way my Achilles wasn’t going to stand for it. It was strained and not cooperating. Walking to the next med tent was the best option for me. DNF officially went on the record (and is the only one to date).

Favorite running tip?
Get the right pair of shoes for you. Don’t buy what your friends wear, don’t wear your old yard shoes, don’t get the  most expensive. Get what fits your feet and feels good. There’s no such thing as "breaking in the shoes." They should feel right from the start, and if they don’t, you don’t have the right pair for you.  Second tip: push yourself. You want to get faster? You have to run faster.
